Exploring Edinburgh: A Traveler’s Guide

Snow falling over the historic skyline of Edinburgh, Scotland, featuring the Balmoral Clock Tower, Edinburgh Castle, and gothic spires on a moody winter day.

Why Edinburgh Was the Perfect Start to My Scotland Travel Adventure

I’m so excited to finally kick off my Scotland travel series! How about you? This was my first European trip in a long time. It felt so AMAZING to step foot in a place I’d only dreamed of visiting. Edinburgh, Scotland’s historic capital, was the perfect starting point in February. I experienced light snowfall, bursts of sunshine, and fewer crowds, making it a peaceful time to visit.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d explore this beautiful country. Watching movies like Made of Honor made me fall in love with Scotland’s magical scenery, greenery, accents, and culture. And let me tell you…it was everything I imagined and more. From cozy pubs to a road trip through the Highlands, this trip was full of unforgettable moments. Today, I’m sharing top must-see sights in Edinburgh from castles and cobblestone streets to stunning city views.

Top Attractions in Edinburgh You Can’t Miss

Edinburgh Castle

A woman stands confidently on a wet stone stairway in Edinburgh, wearing a camel coat, blue tartan scarf, and black boots. She smiles while leaning on a wrought-iron railing, with the historic Edinburgh Castle rising majestically on a rocky hill in the background.

On my very first morning in Edinburgh, Scotland, I was up and ready to explore by 6 a.m. and no, it wasn’t just the jet lag…hahaha! It was pure excitement to see a real-life, bigger-than-life castle right in front of me. Visiting Edinburgh Castle, one of the most iconic landmarks in Europe, had been a dream for so long. I couldn’t wait to dive into the history, beauty, and culture of Scotland from the very start.

We headed straight to the Vennel Steps, which I learned is one of the best places to photograph Edinburgh Castle. As you can see from the photo above, the view is absolutely MAGICAL. The castle rises dramatically above the historic city skyline, and the cobbled steps give it that perfect old-world feel. Beside the steps, you’ll see the Flodden Wall, built after the Battle of Flodden to defend the city. It’s one of the last remnants of Edinburgh’s original fortifications and a glimpse into its medieval past.

From the Vennel, we walked down into Edinburgh’s Old Town, which was still quiet in the early morning. Wandering through the Grassmarket was such a treat. It’s a charming square surrounded by colorful buildings, cozy pubs, and stunning views of the castle above. I loved layering my outfits for the chilly weather and of course, I had to wear a classic tartan scarf. It made me feel connected to the local culture and became one of my favorite pieces of the trip.

️The Royal Mile

A woman wearing a long camel coat, blue plaid scarf, and black boots walks confidently along a cobblestone street in Edinburgh, Scotland. She carries a small white purse and smiles as she passes a historic stone building adorned with Scottish and British flags. The scene captures a crisp, overcast day in the city's Old Town with a mix of pedestrians in the background.

Walking the Royal Mile was one of the most memorable parts of my time in Edinburgh. This iconic cobblestone road runs through Old Town, linking Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. It’s easily one of the most famous streets in Scotland and for good reason.

I loved taking my time exploring it early in the morning while the city was still waking up. The architecture is stunning…towering tenements, weathered stone, and alleyways leading to hidden gardens and courtyards. Every step felt like walking through a movie set!

A woman in a long camel coat walks down a narrow, shadowy Edinburgh close, framed by stone walls and old pipes, with a distant view of the gothic Scott Monument rising above the city skyline in the background.

Along the way, you’ll find everything from local whisky shops and kilt makers to cozy cafes and traditional pubs. I even stopped at a few souvenir spots to pick up some Scottish gifts for friends and family. If you love history, check out St Giles’ Cathedral or The Real Mary King’s Close, a hidden street with tours of Edinburgh’s eerie underground past.

The Royal Mile is a must-see for anyone visiting Edinburgh. It truly captures the magic and mystery of Scotland in one unforgettable walk. I loved being there and now I’m experiencing it all over again just by writing this post. It’s bringing back all the magic!

️Arthur’s Seat

A stunning view of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh during sunset, with its rocky slopes illuminated by soft golden light and sunbeams piercing through the layered clouds, overlooking the city and surrounding countryside.

One of the most magical mornings in Edinburgh was hiking up Arthur’s Seat, the city’s iconic ancient volcano turned hilltop. As we reached the summit, the clouds parted and the sun peeked through, as if Scotland was welcoming us. The trail to the top is peaceful and not too difficult, making it perfect for travelers of all fitness levels. The panoramic 360-degree views from the peak are simply unforgettable. From up there, you can spot Edinburgh Castle, Calton Hill, Holyrood Palace, and the shimmering North Sea in the distance.

Arthur’s Seat is one of the BEST outdoor things to do in Edinburgh. An escape into greenery, fresh air, and the quiet sound of the wind sweeping across the hills. This was our first adventure just outside the city, and it instantly became my favorite. If you’re planning your Edinburgh itinerary, make sure Arthur’s Seat is at the TOP. It’s soul-refreshing, scenic, and absolutely worth every step!

Princes Street Gardens

A scenic view of Edinburgh’s historic cityscape on a cloudy day, featuring the gothic-style towers of The Hub, colorful old townhouses, the neoclassical National Gallery of Scotland in the foreground, and the imposing Edinburgh Castle atop the hill in the background.

One of my favorite places in Edinburgh was Princes Street Gardens. It’s a dreamy green space in the heart of the city, between the historic Old Town and elegant New Town. When we visited in February, the rainy season was in full swing, so I carried my yellow umbrella absolutely everywhere. It rained while we walked through the park, making it even more beautiful and cinematic. As a result, the whole garden felt like a scene from a storybook…moody, lush, and peaceful.

The Ross Fountain offers one of the best views of Edinburgh Castle, perched on a rocky cliff. It’s a perfect photo spot, especially if you’re into dramatic castle views! As you stroll through the gardens, you’ll pass the iconic Scott Monument, a gothic spire dedicated to Sir Walter Scott. It’s one of the most unique monuments I’ve ever seen, and it really adds to the atmosphere of the park.

Princes Street Gardens is a fun spot to explore, perfect for soaking up history and nature. I could imagine how vibrant and colorful it must be when everything is blooming in the summer. I definitely want to come back during that season. But honestly, even in the rain, this park felt magical. If you’re planning a trip to Edinburgh, make sure to include Princes Street Gardens on your itinerary. Bring an umbrella, wear comfy shoes, and enjoy every moment of this scenic and historic gem.

Calton Hill

A stylish woman stands confidently in the snow on a scenic overlook above Edinburgh, Scotland. She wears a camel coat draped over her shoulders, a black and white argyle sweater, and sporty black pants with yellow side stripes. Snow falls lightly as the historic cityscape unfolds behind her, with the Balmoral Hotel clock tower and Edinburgh Castle visible in the misty distance.

If there’s one place that completely stole my heart during our trip to Edinburgh, it was Calton Hill. It’s one of the best viewpoints in the city, and on our last morning in Scotland, it became a winter wonderland. It started snowing big, fluffy snowflakes. The kind that feel like magic falling from the sky and suddenly it was like we were inside a real-life snow globe. I’ll never forget that moment. It was the most beautiful and dreamy send-off we could’ve asked for.

Calton Hill is a must-visit for so many reasons. It’s super accessible (the walk up is short and easy!), and once you’re at the top, you’re treated to some of the best panoramic views of Edinburgh. It’s a photographer’s dream, with historic monuments, skyline views, and natural beauty all in one. In addition, I could see Edinburgh Castle, the Scott Monument, and even Arthur’s Seat, which we had climbed the day before. It gave me goosebumps to look out and see it all come full circle.

A gloved hand places a red heart-shaped love lock onto a weathered green metal fence. The lock is engraved with a romantic message and the location, "Edinburgh, Scotland." In the background, the iconic Balmoral Hotel clock tower rises above a misty, tree-lined view of Princes Street, partially obscured by a foggy sky and bare winter trees.

Also, Calton Hill is one of those spots that just makes you pause and take it all in. The vibe is peaceful, romantic, and completely unforgettable especially in winter. If you’re visiting Edinburgh in the colder months, don’t let the weather hold you back. Grab a cozy coat and go! Calton Hill in the snow might just be the highlight of your entire trip, just like it was for me.

A person in a camel-colored coat and brown boots walks along a wet path overlooking the snowy skyline of Edinburgh, Scotland. Snowflakes fall gently around them as they face the city’s iconic landmarks, including the Balmoral Hotel clock tower and the spire of the Scott Monument. The historic stone buildings and moody winter atmosphere create a serene, contemplative scene.

Exploring Edinburgh: Why I Fell in Love with Scotland’s Capital

Edinburgh completely captured MY HEART! It’s one of the most stunning cities I’ve explored, with a perfect mix of history, beauty, and walkable streets. What I loved most was how easily you can go from one famous landmark to another…all by foot! In just one day, I was able to visit castles, climb hills, stroll through gardens, and take in breathtaking views. That’s what I miss most about traveling in Europe, how much you can experience just by wandering.
