6 Most Beautiful Places in Lake Tahoe You Have to See

Scenic view of Emerald Bay and Fannette Island in Lake Tahoe with pine trees and mountain landscape, iconic viewpoint at Emerald Bay State Park California

One of the BEST road trips I’ve ever done is this one from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe. It’s about an 8-hour drive that feels like stepping into a completely different world. Lake Tahoe is truly a dream destination, known for its crystal-clear blue water and some of the most breathtaking scenery. The nature here is unreal, which is exactly why this is my second time visiting this unforgettable place. The first time I came to Lake Tahoe was in 2020 and immediately I knew I’d be back again someday. There’s something about it! The peaceful energy, the way places like Emerald Bay State Park completely take your breath away.

Once you experience Lake Tahoe, it kind of becomes a part of you. It made me feel at home. Now that I’ve been lucky enough to visit twice, I can confidently share the best places to visit there. From iconic viewpoints to stunning beaches, you’ll see it all! Get ready for these dreamy views! ✨

Sand Harbor State Park

When visiting Lake Tahoe, making a stop at Sand Harbor is an absolute MUST. The kind of place you’ll want to spend an entire day soaking it all in. Think soft sandy beaches, shady forested areas and crystal-clear turquoise water that’s almost too beautiful to believe.

There’s so much to do here too! Whether you’re into kayaking, paddle boarding, or even scuba diving, Sand Harbor is perfect for it. There are also spots available for having a picnic, which makes it such a fun and easy place to unwind. You can be as active or as laid-back as you want. Your choice! Either way, it’s beyond AMAZING!

One of my favorite details here is the iconic rock formations peeking out from the water. They’re so unique and make for the dreamiest photo spots. Seriously, every angle feels picture-perfect!

A couple of tips before you go: there is a daily entrance fee of $10 for Nevada vehicles and $15 for out-of-state visitors. The park typically opens at 8:00 AM and stays open until about one hour after sunset. It also fills up quickly, so getting there early is definitely the move.

Just a short distance from Sand Harbor is the famous Tahoe Rim Trail, a scenic trail that loops all the way around Lake Tahoe. We explored a small section of it and honestly had to stop every few minutes because the scenery was so jaw-dropping.

For something a little more relaxed (and perfect for biking), don’t miss the nearby Tahoe East Shore Trail. I highly recommend renting a bike and cruising along this path. That’s something I’ll be doing next time I visit.

Emerald Bay State Park

The most surreal views of them all have to be at Emerald Bay. It’s truly one of the most iconic spots in all of Lake Tahoe. You’ve got that deep blue water, the surrounding mountains, and the little island sitting perfectly in the middle. If you’re chasing those must-see views in Lake Tahoe, this is the place.

To get to this incredible viewpoint, head toward the Eagle Falls Trail. As you can see from my photos, the panoramic views overlooking Fannette Island are absolutely breathtaking. The hike itself is totally doable, which makes it perfect if you want a quick adventure with a huge reward. Once you reach the top, you’ll want to stay there for a while and just take it all in. We definitely did that! Leaving was the last thing I wanted. I could have stayed there forever!

You might find yourself wanting to explore even more afterwards. If you do, I highly recommend checking out the nearby Cascade Falls Trail. We actually hiked this one back in 2020, and it’s such a beautiful and slightly more extended hike. The trail takes you through forest before opening up to stunning views of Cascade Lake and Lake Tahoe. And when you reach the waterfall? You’ll want to soak it all in…literally. I’ll never forget that refreshing cold-plunge at the end!

Vikingsholm Castle

Tucked right along the shoreline of Emerald Bay State Park, Vikingsholm feels like a true fairytale. Getting there is part of the experience!

To reach the castle, you’ll take a scenic walk down from the parking area (about 1 mile each way). The walk down is fairly easy, but keep in mind you’ll be hiking back up on the return. Save a little extra energy for that! While the uphill climb definitely gets your heart going, it’s 100% worth it.

Once you reach the bottom, the whole scene unfolds into something truly unforgettable. You’ve got the crystal-clear lake right in front of you and this massive, storybook-style mansion sitting just behind you.

This beautiful Scandinavian-style castle dates all the way back to 1929 and was once a dreamy summer home. Guess how many rooms it has? 38!!! You can walk around the exterior and really take in all the details. I loved how it stood out against the natural beauty of the lake. Also, it was really fun imagining what life must have been like back in the day. Picture living here and waking up to that majestic view every single morning… WOW!

Eagle Falls

On your way to and from Vikingsholm castle, make sure to stop at Eagle Falls. This powerful waterfall is located right near the trailhead in Emerald Bay State Park. It’s such an easy stop, but one you definitely don’t want to miss.

The moment you near it, you’ll hear the roar of the rushing water and breathe in that fresh mountain air. You don’t have to hike far to get an incredible view. Plus, this spot adds even more magic to an already unforgettable day exploring Lake Tahoe.

Nevada Beach

If you’re in the search of a peaceful, less crowded beach, Nevada Beach is it. Every time I’ve come here, it’s been very calm, quiet, and captivating. Being present comes naturally at this beach! Nature has that power over us.

There’s something so special about watching the tiny waves gently crash at your feet while the mountains rise in the distance. A true masterpiece! And if you can time your visit for the evening, you’re in for something unforgettable. This is the beach where I experienced one of the most beautiful Lake Tahoe sunsets. I found myself just staring out at the colors reflecting on the water and not wanting this moment to end.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park

One of the things I loved most about this area is how convenient everything is. Van Sickle Bi-State Park was literally walking distance from our hotel. Plus, most of the hotels are right nearby. You’re also super close to the main village area where you’ll find tons of restaurants, bars, and cute little shops. Such a fun place to wander around. Looking for something a little extra? I suggest hopping on the Heavenly Gondola, which takes you up for some incredible panoramic views over Lake Tahoe. You don’t want to miss it!

One of the best parts about Van Sickle Bi-State Park is that it sits right on the border of California and Nevada. You can literally stand with one foot in each state. I definitely hopped back and forth a few times. I couldn’t decide which state I liked more! hahaha!

Lake Tahoe is so much more than the six spots I’ve shared in this travel guide. It’s one of those bucket list destinations you can return to again and again and still discover something new. Without a doubt Lake Tahoe delivers endless outdoor adventures in every season. Have you been yet? And if you have, what was your most unforgettable experience?
